- The Nordic IVF-Laboratory Society  -

The NILS meeting in 2008 was located at Hotel Legoland in Billund, Denmark on November 21-22.

Hotel Legoland is a modern conference facility, which gave the perfect atmosphere for a NILS-meeting. The scientific program of the meeting was quite ambitious with several international speakers.

The first session was a pro and contra-session in regard to polarisation microscopy. Both Thomas Ebner (AUS) and Bryan Woodward (UK) did their best to convince the audience about the pros and cons for the topic.

The following session concentrated on new techniques for evaluation of the embryo quality. Aish Ahlström (S) talked about NIR and embryo quality and Daniel Brison (UK) gave a lecture about the amino acid turnover as a predictive parameter for embryo implantation.

Then all the fun started! The organising committee had a surprice. All participants inclusive the sponsors and exhibitors were invited to play with LEGO bricks.

Build an elephant” was the topic and that’s not easy when only one person from a group is allowed to see the original in small scale. Everyone seemed to have fun and surely everyone enjoyed the cold beers served afterwards. The evening was as usual with dinner and dance, this time with the live band “Full Moon fever”.

Saturday morning Hikke von Doornick gave a lecture on the topic “Epigenetics”, which is always a difficult topic but also very relevant. Julius Hreinsson continued with a review on vitrification. Last but not least we had the monitor from the Danish Medical Agency to update us on the EU Cell and Tissue Directive in the Nordic Countries before Thorir Hardarson told us about the ESHRE certification for embryologists.

At the general Assembly the possible establishment of NFS interest groups and the influence of this on the NILS meetings was discussed. In general, the participants wanted the NILS meetings to continue but it was decided to leave the final decision to after the NFS conference in August 2009.
